The cliché book has been put into action but for some reason I didn't mind

I hate the formula and I find it annoying when movies following it are constantly being produced. Laws of Attraction follows the formula as if it is the bible. The jokes are stale, the plot has to be taken with a grain of salt and the side characters are unfunny but overally I still found that I had some mild liking to this film. I don't know what really came over me other than the fact that I found the romance of the film to have wit and a real sense of tenderness to it.

Pierce Brosnan and Juliane Moore play opposing divorce attorneys who bicker over every case. The audience and the characters themselves know for a fact that opposites all ways attract but the way these two come together works in and of it's self. Juliane Moore may say Pierce Brosnan's Daniel Rafferty is nothing more than a dirty brute but we as an audience can tell she has professional respect for him which separates this from normal films of this caliber. The battles in the divorce court are fiery and full of passion, passion we both know that these two want to put into their love life.

Moore's Audrey Woods is very cliché but I still found she had some life to her. Sure she eats junk food and secretly fears the ticking of her biological clock like every woman in this kind of comedy but she is different. She does not have the same reasons as some of the other women, dealing with divorce has made her develop a fear of falling in love. She is content with being alone but we can tell that she has considered seeking more. Her relationship with Rafferty is based on her trying to find his flaws to win a case and she finds him to be an admirable opponent. This admiration is mixed with jealousy and eventually love, she has trouble mixing the three emotions.

Brosnan's character is really what made me feel I had to give this film a mild recommendation. He is witty, smart and he truly is in love with Moore's character. His loudness and shrewd behavior aren't really a character trait of his, he plays with this perception with Audrey to put in a sense of fascination in her. The resolution of the plot is very satisfying in the sense that Audrey is not the one who directly settles it. Rafferty lets his feelings out in the highlight of this film saying he doesn't believe in divorce and that he would end his career for Woods. All though this plot point is somewhat tired I admired the sincerity Brosnan presented with it.

Sadly besides for our two lead characters the film is silly. We have a stupid Mother character who serves as the standard complainer about how her daughter will never be happy unless she finds a man. We spend a lot of time in the ol' Emerald Isle where a great deal of Irish stereotypes are presented as jokes. Frankly I was surprised Brosnan would do some of that material because my Irish blood couldn't find it funny in the least bit. The festival of shooting down Guiness and a scene where Brosnan is kissing one of the worst Irish stereotypes in film is meant to be sincere after a wedding ceremony and a touching score in the background.

Overall I found that I didn't mind being fed the old sap as much with Laws of Attraction and I really don't know why. 9 out of 10 times I would hate a film like this
