Animated fantasy classic

Warning: Spoilers
With the advent of CGI, fantasy films have basically exploded onto the market, allowing for a bigger and wider distribution of one of cinema's most under-represented genres. Before, fantasy films were actually quite rare, mostly existing as a couple-three films in the Science Fiction section. The Last Unicorn remains a classic of such films, a movie that's pretty basic in nature but very appealing and gorgeous to see, not to mention a bit sentimental for those prone to nostalgia.

Simple idea here: Mia Farrow voices the last unicorn who is on a journey to find out what happened to her compatriots. The explanation lies in a dark tower on the sea-shore, an evil ruler of a wasteland empire, and friends made in the form of an inexperienced wizard and a knight in shining armor. The movie is punctuated by a theme song, the lyrics of which put even Randy Newman to shame for over-explanation and repetition of imagery the audience can essentially decipher itself. Of anything, it's the music in this movie that really stretches my patience with it. The rest of it, the animation, the story, and even the somewhat lazy voice-acting, I find all endearing in their own ways.

Especially the animation. I'm a sucker for good animation. The visuals in this movie span from gorgeous to all-out psychedelic. The character designs are great, and the ending scene near the ocean is amazing.

I honestly don't think this movie will ever go out of style. It's fondly remembered by many a person who grew up watching it, it's a decent story for newer viewers, and if all else fails, it does actually have rather the cult following for stoners (I hate to be aware of things like this for movies that are so innocent, but when you live with a stoner, you can't avoid the more disturbingly weird aspects of fantasy movies in general. The tree metamorphosis sticks out particularly in mind as a moment that can't be explained away to anyone toked).
