Nine (2009)
6/10
Musicals once were fantastic films. NINE is not in that league.

Yes, at one time Musicals were fantastic entertainment, That time is long past.

NINE comes over as fair entertainment, and no where as good as the original Broadway play.

The director was Rob Marshal, this film needed a talent like Vicente Minnelli as director. The screen play was written by Anthony Minghella & Micheal Tolken. It is based on the Tony award winning play by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit. The Broadway Musical was in itself taken from a film by Fellini, '8 1/2'.

More than a few songs were regretfully cut to keep the film under 2 hours. The 118 minute running time includes about 15 minutes of credits.

Danny Day Lewis is the lead & he does attempt to recreate Marcello Mastrioanni's superb role in '8 1/2'. Marion Cotillard is excellent as his wife. Penelpe Cruz, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren,Nicole Kidman among others are the other women in his life.

I did not see the Broadway Musical BUT am sure the songs and dances came over better. This is not a terrible film, by any means, It just does not measure up to musicals of the past.
