Little Ashes (2008)
6/10
Surrealist Brokeback Mouintain

Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to this movie because of the Salvador Dali aspect of it. It examines his early life with Frederico Lorca and Luis Bunuel. This is a pretty weird triumvirate and the movie does portray this well. So be prepared - there are some bizarre scenes.

What this movie does lack is any chemistry between the three central characters and their women friends. The actor playing Dali is rather distant and lacks any charisma and energy.. For the most part Dali comes off as a buffoon. There are also far too many wordy conversations on revolution, the bourgeoisie. art… The only compassion is at the end of the movie when Lorca is executed.

I recommend this film only if you are interested in the life of Dali, otherwise pass it by.

A movie describing the life of Dali and Lorca should be so much better than this one.
