Warning: Spoilers
From the director of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Funhouse", "Crocodile" follows the angered violent rampage of a giant crocodile hunting down an obnoxious group of college students on a boat trip for the spring break, with one of them stealing an egg belonging to the monstrous beast. Director Tobe Hooper does a fair job of not completely allowing the croc to be visible on screen so not to reveal how fake it is, opting to shoot the head up close (or in some instances its scaly tail) so that lack of authenticity wouldn't be entirely noticeable. His difficult task is giving us a reason not to root for the demise of practically every single character being hunted, most of the attractive cast smoking dope and guzzling booze, goofing off and acting silly—that is before the crocodile sets eyes on them, dragging the crippled boat (that gets stuck after the rope tying it to a raft is chewed away when the croc bites down on one of the kids, sending the boat drifting until it reaches a reststop) into the water, stranding the bunch in the wilderness. It looks like the filmmakers had this massive crocodile head to work with as is evident in one scene where the beast opens its large mouth as the group scatters in terror. I especially like a few scenes which show certain victims caught in the mouth of the crocodile, legs wiggling, no way to escape. Chris Solari is the ultimate asshole of the film, Duncan, a real pain in the ass who causes non-stop mischief and ruins the romance of young lovers, Brady (Mark McLachlan) and girlfriend Claire (Caitlin Martin, the most likable character in the cast) when he cannot help but bring up a sexual incident involving slutty multi-color haired hottie, Sunny (Sommer Knight; Duncan invited her I guess just for pure meanness, the belief by some viewers is that he has a crush for Brady, his pal) during a fireside drinking binge. As far as the CGI goes, Tobe shoots the crocodile's entire body during the night which is a wise choice, I think, because it rarely works when other movies allow their giant monsters to be visible during broad daylight. Saying that, Tobe does eventually fall into the trap and allow the CGI crocodile to appear during the day and it is less affective, but the effects aren't nearly as rotten as we usually see during a syfy channel crapfest—but there is one scene that is too ridiculous to take seriously and that is when the crocodile flies in air over the boat into the water on the opposite side! The funniest scene could be when Duncan seems to be lunch only for the crocodile to spit him back out! With Terrance Evans as tobacco-chewing croc hunter, Shurkin and Harrison Young as Sheriff Bowman. Not only does the croc demolish the kids' boat, but the beast also decimates a store; as is often the case, this mad croc leaves a lot of carnage in its wake. This movie, on second viewing, wasn't nearly as bad as I once remembered but isn't remarkable either.
