The tough and resourceful Renchard (a sturdy and credible portrayal by Mark Dacascos) has managed to survive a deadly plague that has turned most of the population into dangerous mutant zombies. Director Griff Furst, working from a tight and absorbing script by Geoff Meed, relates the engrossing story at a brisk pace, maintains a dark, grim, and serious tone throughout, makes fine use of desolate backwoods locations, delivers a handy helping of bloody violence, and stages the action with real flair and skill. Decascos makes for a strong and believable protagonist as he struggles to keep his sanity, vigorously mixes it up with the ghouls, and uses a gun, a machete, and his own bare hands to take out the fiends. Moreover, there are sound supporting performances by the gorgeous Jennifer Lee Wiggins as the spunky Brianna, Meed as happy-go-lucky redneck Vincent, and Ryan Lloyd as Vincent's laconic partner Mike. The rot-faced zombies are truly grotesque and frightening. The last third with Renchard rescuing Brianna from a zombie-infested city is extremely tense, gripping, and exciting. Alexander Yellen's sharp cinematography gives the picture an effectively bleak sun-bleached look. David Raiklen's rattling ominous score hits the rousing spot. A worthwhile movie.
