Not a cult film like Wake Up Sid but superb
8 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Wake Up Sid(2009) a film that is still remembered today, The film released at the time when Ranbhir Kapoor was treated as any other newcomer but this film proved he could really perform and also the film achieved cult status. Ranbhir Kapoor slowly and steadily reached on the top of his stardom recently post Rockstar and Barfi. The team of Wake Up Sid returns after a 4 year hiatus with Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani which brings back Ranbhir-Deepika ex lovers together after Bachna Ae Haseeno(2008). Sadly I expected it to be lot more. The film is watchable no doubt, it has funny moments, emotional scenes but it doesn't have the unique quality that makes Wake Up Sid so memorable. The film resembles the films made after Dil Chahta Hai. The film starts off well in a flashback mode, where Naina as the stereotypical nerd wears specks(but her hair is blonde) runs away from her home for the trip of her ex school mates, where she meets Ranbhir whose name is Bunny, Kalki and Aditya Roy Kapoor what follows is all funny moments, slowly and predictability till interval, Deepika falls in love with Ranbhir. There are some funny episodes, like the fight and the chase that follows in the first half, even the trek scenes are well shot There are several hilarious moments and also the emotional quotient is well handled. The second half reaches 8 years later where surprisingly nothing looks much different, except that Aditya Roy Kapoor has become a bearded boozard(perhaps after the success of Aashiqui 2), Deepika is a doctor perhaps and still single and again rest is predictable and alls well and ends well. Direction by Ayan Mukherjee is good but the writing isn't too watertight Music is good, Badmateez Dil already a rage is superb, Ranbhir's free dance moves make it all the more enjoyable, Dilii Walli song too is superb, Ghagra song is good too but looks out of place in the film, Perhaps just to add Madhuri in the film. Kabira is the best track

Ranbhir Kapoor again proves that he is Mr. Dependable though this role isn't as challenging as his last few films but yet he does a superb job Deepika Padukone too plays her part well as usual Kalki is superb in her role, Aditya Roy Kapoor is good though his role is similar to AASHIQUI 2(second half). Amongst rest Farooque Sheikh is likable in a 2-3 scene role, Tanvi Azmi is fantastic in a short role, Poorna Jagannathan is okay in a cameo Amongst rest Kunal Roy Kapoor is admirable, while Rana Daggubati has 1 scene, Dolly Ahluwalia and rest make their presence felt.
