Very Little Works in this Violent, Bloody, Over-The-Top Bizarre Flick

Warning: Spoilers
You might think that with a strong cast of James Gandolfini, Alexis Bledel, and Saoirse Ronan, you might have the foundation of a good movie. However, I thought very little worked in what I imagine was supposed to be a darkly humorous fantasy. We do get a lot of violence, bloodshed, and over-the-top bizarreness, but I felt it never came together to be entertaining.

Alexis Bledel portrays Violet, a sadistic psychopathic young assassin working in tandem with her eighteen year old partner-in-crime Daisy, portrayed by Saoirse Ronan. The duo can be playing paddy cake, riding a tricycle, or sucking on a lollipop one minute then be slaughtering anyone in their path the next.

In the "Just When You Think You've Seen It All Dept.": there were two scenes of note. In one, after Violet kills four mob henchmen, and they are lying on the floor, Violet and Daisy feel compelled to do what they call the "internal bleeding dance", where they stomp on the dead bodies till blood comes gushing out of their mouths. The other takes place after they stack the bodies up in the shower. Here, Violet steps on the face of one the henchmen, and calmly takes a shower over their corpses.

The plot, if you want to call it that, revolves around the latest assigned hit for the two baby-faced assassins. He turns out to be the late great James Gandolfini (who is never given a name in the movie), and who has stolen money and merchandise from not one but two separate mobs, who now want him dead. However, Violet and Daisy soon find out there's much more to this assignment than they bargained for.

I'm certainly a fan of well made, bizarre and dark films. However, here Geoffrey Fletcher, who wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar for "Precious" , makes his directorial debut a disappointment. In my opinion, some very good talent is wasted in a movie that relies way too heavily on being outrageous rather than solidly entertaining.
