Cuban Fury (2014)
6/10
Average comedy but not a waste of time...

Warning: Spoilers
I really don't know much about salsa dancing. The only dance move I can do is The Robot and I can barely do that. However, I do like to occasionally EAT salsa and I really like Nick Frost and Chris O'Dowd. So, I guess what I'm saying is that my lack of knowledge about the type of dancing really means jack because it's just a comedy meant for the entertaining and not for the educating.

For the most part, I enjoyed "Cuban Fury." Granted, I didn't think it was über-excellent and I didn't find my gut was on the verge of bursting or that my laugh gland (totally a real organ) was about to burn itself out from the comedy but there was a charm to it and it was slightly amusing. The only real problem I had with the film was that even though it contained a cast of comedic players I particularly enjoy (and were the entire reason I decided to watch the film), I just couldn't get into them and the characters they were playing because they felt completely ill-fitted for their roles.

I think both Chris O'Dowd and Nick Frost are hilarious but I just didn't see either of them really fitting into their roles. O'Dowd didn't look completely convincing as the antagonistic jerk that constantly mocks and belittles Frost's character and Frost look very out of place as the lead man in this romcom. Many of his interactions with the love interest played by Rashida Jones came off looking awkward—and I don't mean the character was awkward around the woman that made him feel funny in his loins but Frost looked lost trying to get the character zeroed in right for these sequences. It was a little bit distracting for me and it really made for a hard time for me to try and get into the love angle of the film's story. However, neither man was outlandishly terrible in their portrayal so it didn't kill the entire movie for me.

"Cuban Fury" was pretty average but didn't feel like an entire waste of time. It has its moments and it has its problems but it made me slightly chuckle here and there and proved to be an alright film.

Hey there, fellow traveler! Feel like reading more of my rants, ramblings, geek references, bad jokes and other movie reviews (like a more in-depth review of "Cuban Fury" and other films that should have a little bit of salsa thrown in)? If you do, you can skip on over to my blog; revronmovies.blogspot.com. If you don't, that's okay, too. You're still a super star in my book!
