Just thought people ought to know how ridiculous the movie's alleged 12.7 earthquake is. After doing a small about of research, here is what I found:
A Richter 10 quake would be the equivalent to a continent suddenly ripping itself into half.
A Richter 11 quake would be the equivalent to a Mars sized body impacting the planet, with the energy released causing the heating and liquefaction of the entire planet's surface (turning it into lava).
The theoretical upper limit for our planet would be Richter 12.0, which is the point at which the energy released would literally split the entire planet in half.
So... yeah.
