Mambo Italiano (2003): Dir: Emile Gaudreault / Cast: Luke Kirby, Peter Miller, Paul Sorvino, Ginette Reno, Mary Walsh: Absolutely hilarious and in the tradition of My Big fat Greek Wedding but the difference is the sexuality addressed. Luke Kirby lives with his parents and sister in a strict Italian household. Hooking up with a childhood friend becomes a secret relationship that his family will reject too. Clever and intelligent in that it isn't so much about a chosen sexuality but about a family dealing with it and a solution that proves satisfactory. Observantly directed by Emile Gaudreault with interesting locations and settings. He is also backed by a skilled ensemble cast. Luke Kirby plays off the emotions of someone who wishes not to hide who he is but desires acceptance. Ginette Reno and Paul Sorvino are hilarious as his strict yet bewildered parents who bring in the biggest laughs. Peter Miller plays Kirby's boyfriend who is a cop hiding his true nature. His mother hopes to cure his homosexuality by setting him up with potential dates. Claudia Ferri delivers the funniest performance as a frustrated sister. Mary Walsh also appears and she seems to be an invaluable casting in these independent films. The result is a provocative comedy about dealing with one's sexuality. It is not only one of the funniest films of the year but easily one of the best. Score: 10 / 10
