Review of Backstage

Backstage (1937)

Does no favours to Anna Neagle
19 February 2016
This film represented the end of the first part of Anna Neagles film career. Her next film would be Victoria The Great and would lead into more dramatic roles and to the top of the British box office charts.it is difficult to judge her performance on the evidence of this film because the film has had 24 minutes hacked out of it,mainly it would seem from her role..As a result we have to listen to countless songs from Arthur Tracey. So it would appear that it is likely that this copy was used for an American release. The story is typical backstage. The musical numbers are spectacular. However I doubt we will ever know what the full film was like
