Review of Sairat

Sairat (2016)
2/10
weird dream love story of a psycho director

Warning: Spoilers
Marathi movies have got good days now.... Some very good actors, good musicians, good money being invested, good reach of viewership. This has brought up lots of immature directors, & inexperienced producers, who do not know what they really want to show.

Only Good cinematography does not mean the movie is well directed...

Earlier movie of Nagraj (Fandry) highlighted the impact of cast system in rural Maharashtra & was a sure 'Art-Film' genre. So, we can give it some allowances. But Sairat is promoted as a full professional film by Zee. It does not give enough emphasis on caste or economical difference of two families. Hence the opposition to their love seems very filmy.

Film promos take very good care not to provide any glimpse of the dark side of the movie, which is in a way cheating with the audience. Has anyone thought why producers had to lure people in theaters by showing such false picture?

First half of the movie has good cinematography, decent acting, some very good music, & nice speed. Second half lacks on all these fronts. Some scenes could have been very good, though are lost in translation.

Some examples are: 1. If this is a real middle class village story, then director has to remember, that not every girl goes through a gang rape attempt experience. Also, the girl is shown very confident till she runs away. But in this rape attempt scene, she becomes weak, as she has lost the mental backup of her home village & family support. This fact is not visible anyhow in this or any adjacent scenes. Actually her face/actions are rarely visible during this scene.

2. The character of lady who helps them in unknown city is confusing. Is she supposed to be strong or lame? She is given no value in the movie at all. Nobody even thanks her for saving the girl from gang rape.

3. When the couple runs away & gets on a bus going to their home village by mistake; why do they not stop the bus & get out midway? Just because Director wants to show some further conflict scenes, they take this funny decision to return all the way to their village & hide in the very fields own by their enemy??

3. In the scene after the argument, the girl returns to her boyfriend/husband(?), when she sees a beggar couple at train station supporting each other. This scene is completely ineffective (Direction/action/dialogues nothing helps here). The beggar couple is always out of focus & I am sure 80% of audience would simply miss this context. This is one of the important story turning points in the second half.

4. Just because the director wants to show the 'beautiful(?)' last scene of "infant kid with bloody footprints", the movie suddenly jumps about 3 years in last 5 minutes without any explanation..... Acting of her relatives clearly indicate there is something wrong. Every viewer knows what is coming.... But the scene takes you to peak of roller coaster & waits there, just to drop you to see the bloody scene through the cry of innocent infant..... Is this really needed?? (This is the reason I called the review heading "....psycho director").

5. There are "silence zones" in movie in second half without any background music or dialogues, at 'ALL' the important turns.... This tact is surely effective once, but it keeps on coming until last scene & loses it's charm with repetition. Same is with "slow motion" shots in first half & love songs. They are just too many...

6. Dialogues are very repetitive & often end without summing up the message. (Example: The dialog "I want to talk with you..." on Hyderabad streets. Just say it already after you have snatched & held twisted her hand....). The current lack of good story/dialog writer in Marathi movie industry is highlighted time & again here. I wonder how many days actors can suppress this shortfall by their acting skills?

7. Chemistry in the lead couple is never seen in the movie... just plain acting.... How they suddenly go from "die for each other couple" to a "loveless forced together couple" in just 2-3 days from running away from home, seems very very unrealistic. There is no love in this love story.. first half is infatuation. second half is only hatred.

In all, this is neither a art oriented movie, nor a mainstream cinema, but an effort to provide both, ended up messing both parts. The 2 ratings I have given are for supporting cast acting in first half & music by Ajay-Atul, which was the only plus point I found in this movie.

There are also some very good scenes (Proposing scene) in first half, so watching this movie is not a complete waste of time, but still I would not recommend this movie to anyone.... especially to children.
