No clue why this is so popular

Warning: Spoilers
"Hinterholz 8" is an Austrian German-language production from 1998, so two more years and this one will have its 20th anniversary. It is one of the most known works by director Harald Sicheritz and he is also the one who adapted the Toland Düringer play here. Düringer, however, plays the main character in this 105-minute film from the last millennium. If you take a look at the photo from this film, you may actually think that this is some kind of horror movie, but no it is not. There is some violence in here, but it is really about the comedy. I must admit I am not an expert on Austrian cinema, even if I have seen quite a few films from that country, but looking at the cast I still see some familiar names such as Alfred Dorfer, Maria Hofstätter and Karl Markovics, so you can certainly say that it was a prestigious production. And it also managed to score an award here and there in Austria. Still I myself did not really enjoy the watch. I must say the film's comedic approach came typically through absurdity and unexpected reactions and scene, but this is nothing new for comedy films from that country. A convincing plot is sacrificed for constant attempts at cheap humor and this really hurts the film overall. The result is also that this film is worthless from any other perspective in terms of genre than comedy. And if you do not appreciate the typical Austrian humor in here, then it will be an extremely forgettable watch. This is what it was for me. I give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.
