Shutter (II) (2004)

A young couple inflict a fatal hit-and-run, and become the object of ghostly revenge.

Simple story that develops complications as layers of deception are peeled away. I did find this a bit ho-hum as it went through its paces, but at about 75 mins it hit the after burners and turned out a satisfying horror.

The concept is very good, and there is plenty of skill in the story telling, but there was too much emphasis on the couple in slowly edited scenes while the curious fate of the other characters was pretty much dumped in as a fait accompli and the victim was only "fleshed out" in cliché flashbacks. But once that awkwardness is put behind us the true chills set in.

The performances are OK, probably too much dialogue. One toilet scene was amusing, but should have been ditched - kill your babies. Photography was ordinary, which is disappointing given the theme of the story and the bit of philosophy about photos and reality injected early on. Plenty of Ringu style menace, but the swinging door image at the end gives the story a unique poignancy.

Music was effective, and there is one good, simple jump scare in a bedroom scene.

Overall: Well directed climax makes up for medium paced build up.
