6/10
wacky characters
6 September 2016
Young Earl lost his preacher father when a guy (Thomas Haden Church) hit him with a barstool. Earl Crest (Joshua Jackson) and Baby (Jaime King) are completely in love despite being step-siblings, by marriage. His mother married her father (John Mellencamp). She's desperate to leave the small Texas town to be in a soap opera in L.A. Her idiot cousin Junior (DJ Qualls) gets caught up when he joined his criminal friend Tinker Johnson in a minor crime spree. They stole $20k and drugs from a pizza delivery guy. Tinker got thrown in prison and Junior leaves the money with Earl. Drug lord Mr. Smith wants his money back. Tinker is fresh out of prison and comes looking for the money.

It's a lot of wacky characters but not terribly funny. It is sometimes cute. Even the darker moments are played with an eye towards broad comedy. David Semel is mostly a TV director and his sitcom TV ways aren't that far away. Joshua Jackson is too calm which only works if he has a tough cowboy personality. This is a quirky wacky lightweight crime-comedy.
