Let's face it - this is not a great comedy
28 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Considering its cast, this wartime farce is a forgettable trifle. But there are a few memorable moments: the high spot is Betty Hutton's unusual, lightning-fast "Let's Not Talk About Love" number, which includes such lyrics as "Let's talk about drugs! Let's talk about dope! Let's try to picture Paramount minus Bob Hope"! Bob has a few funny lines, the best probably being "She looks like Madeline Carroll, Dorothy Lamour and Claudette Colbert all rolled up into one big lump. She's yours!". Some of the casting is strange: the middle-aged and unattractive Phyllis Povah, the not pretty but cute Zasu Pitts, and the legitimately beautiful Eve Arden are supposed to elicit similar reactions as possible "dates" from Hope and his two soldier-buddies. In reality, any man would be lucky to be with Eve Arden! ** out of 4.
