Saved by the Bell (1989–1992)
6/10
Above-average school sitcom
27 April 2017
This sitcom is set in a high school in Los Angeles. It centres on six pupils: narcissist Zack, his dorky sidekick Screech, muscular jock Slater, hot girl Kelly, 'princess' Lisa and ardent feminist Jessie - as well as their headmaster Mr Belding.

This is a sanitised view of high-school life, which avoids many topics which should be covered. Sex is never mentioned, there's no significant violence and there's no swearing. Some of the situations are far-fetched. It seems to be aimed at kids who are younger than the main characters.

Screech's intelligence is very inconsistent. In some episodes, he is shown to be very intelligent - but in others he is shown to be stupid.

On several occasions, a new character becomes a major part of an episode or two - yet then disappears without explanation and is never seen or mentioned again. Examples of this include the girl wrestler, the fat girl who pays for a date with Zack, Slater's girlfriend who arrives from Germany, the school nurse, the gold-digging girl and the homeless girl and her father. The reason for the absence of Jessie and Lisa in many episodes is never indicated to the audience.

The episodes were originally shown with several of them out of order, which is noticeable from the continuity of the story lines and the ages of the kids in each episode.

The British teenage shows Skins and The Inbetweeners are much better.
