Review of Baywatch

Baywatch (2017)
7/10
All fun until the jokes are repetitive and a lifeless plot.

Warning: Spoilers
Baywatch is in all a fun summer blockbuster action comedy with no brains and no plot. Based on a campy TV series, which I was once a fan of. Baywatch tries to be a little too much like 21 Jump Street, all stupid humor and a thin plot about drugs being smuggled in its concept. In this case, about lifeguards trying to solve the case and stop drugs from washing up on their beach. Sure, there is plenty of eye candy for men and ladies; you get the ladies in bikinis running in slow mo and than you have Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron shirtless if the female audiences find them to be eye candy.

The plot follows Lt. Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) and his lifeguard team preparing for tryouts for the new recruits. The new recruits trying out are Ronnie (Jon Bass) an awkward techie guy, who is already falling for one of the lifeguards C.J. (Kelly Rohrbach). Summer (Alexandra Daddario) is also a new recruit, who is smart and skilled. Then, there is Matt Brody (Zac Efron) a cocky, arrogant young guy, who won two medals in the Olympics and ruined it when he partied too hard and vomit while in the swimming event. Mitch discovers drugs being washed up on shore and suspects its Victoria (Priyanka Chopra) with her new club opening up next to the shore.

Baywatch is a lot of fun, its not meant to be taken seriously. The direction knows that it is fun and campy for entertainment. It is fun to see how these different characters interact, C.J. being a hot lifeguard and Ronnie trying to score a date with her and every encounter with her goes awry. Matt and Mitch always going head to head, and the duo trying to investigate this drug crime. It may not be as good as 21 Jump Street which the filmmakers knew how to keep it energetic and used a lot of media references and squeezed that in there for its jokes. Baywatch only has the typical stupid humor. It all comes from Matt Brody, which is an entertaining character with his stupidity. Feels like his character from Neighbors transferred into this film. Sure, there are some sexual jokes such as a guys private parts accidentally getting stuck on a beach wooden chair as he fell on it, a gratuitous scene of a dead guy being full frontal, etc. The sexual jokes is not as bad as Neighbors.

The film does have a fun cast of a likable duo of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Alexandara Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach are beautiful talented actress that made their characters fun. Priyanka Chopra had a great time playing a fun villain.

There are a few action and chase scenes of seeing Mitch jumping out of a burning yacht after saving a few girls. Going undercover in a morgue. Or a climactic showdown with the antagonist while the fireworks are going off. The visual effects in that scene was decent with the helicopter and the fireworks.

What did not work with Baywatch is there is no real plot. Has a fun idea of seeing these lifeguards work together and trying to solve this drug case while the police officer that is assigned in that area is stupid. Also, the stupid humor can also be repetitive with the same jokes.

Overall, Baywatch is a fairly fun summer movie with its likable cast, entertaining repetitive humor, and a campy concept based on the show. Does leave a forgettable plot. Lets not forget a surprise cameo with two of the cast from the show which is fun to see.
