Bermuda Triangle North Sea (2011 TV Movie)
4/10
Occasionally potential for more, but ultimately just the same generic German catastrophe film mediocrity

Warning: Spoilers
"Bermuda-Dreieck Nordsee" or "Bermuda Triangle North Sea" or even "Earth Rage" is a German small screen production from 2011, so this television movie had its 5th anniversary last year. And if you read some of the names from the cast members, namely Jaenicke, Zimmermann, Preuß and Landgrebe, then perhaps you guess correctly already that this is another German (despite the American director) movie that focuses on some kind of catastrophe. This time it is human made as the term "witch hole" is not really based on any supernatural foundation, but it is about the greed of some German economists and businessmen that may or may not end in a big tragedy eventually. I think early on the film had a solid deal potential as Jaenicke and Zimmermann were better than usual and the material in terms of the script wasn't too bad either. But the latter gets worse inevitable the longer the film went on during its massive almost 2.5 hours runtime. And at the very end with the baity rescue scene it was just at its worst once again as these German catastrophe-themed films usually are. The big problem is that despite the scientific nonsense and the characters that just cannot be taken seriously with their behavior and dialogues and sometimes also line deliveries, the film takes itself basically seriously from start to finish. it wants to teach a lesson. It wants to make a serious impact. It does not want to be pointless fun that makes fun of itself occasionally like the Sharknado films. And this is what finally breaks the film's neck. Still I must say given the massive runtime, the film had surprisingly few lengths, so there certainly was the potential for more. But at the end it just turned out as weak as you could expect if you take a closer look at the bodies of work by the writers and director. The worst aspect of the film was probably everything that involved Jennifer Ulrich's character. A young woman discovering all this stuff and she is part of some super secret environmental organization and well.. With the performance by her and the writing, it was just a completely abysmal embarrassment. What can you say it was just really really bad. Quite a shame as they at least stayed away (apart from the last shot perhaps) from turning this into a stupid love story between Zimmermann's character (who looks as hot as always) and Jaenicke's (who looks as cool as always. I believe with more expertise and talent behind (and occasionally also in front of) the camera, this could have been a much better watch. But the way it turned out, it gets a thumbs-down from me, mostly because of the weak second half. Watch something else instead.
