Twisted Meal Is Back In Black

Warning: Spoilers
Twisted Metal: Black was the first Twisted Metal game released on the Playstation 2, and it was announced at a time when the franchise was at its lowest point. TMIII and TM4, made by 989 Studios, were hated by gamers who preferred the first two games, made by Singletrac. Thankfully, the original team, now under the name Incog Inc, was put back in the driver's seat for this Twisted Metal game, and if you read the title, you can see what I am getting to.

Taking place in an alternate universe separate from Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2: World Tour, the game takes place in the fictional city of Midtown. Calypso (who has been given a redesign to match the dark atmosphere of the game's world) is ready to hold his infamous contest, and for contestants, he has busted out select inmates from Blackfield Asylum, getting them to play on the ground that if they won, they would get what their heart desires.

So the game is typical Twisted Metal 2 gameplay. You choose one of the playable vehicles, and the object is to destroy all opponents to advance to the next level. However, Black takes Twisted Metal further and uses the power of the Playstation 2 to make this the most intense car combat experience ever. One level, the Suburbs, is fully destructible, and another level, the Junkyard, has it where it will rain. The controls are like the first two games, only now, they added rules where you can break out of the ice when frozen by button mashing, and even gave some arenas unique Enviromental weapons and some vehicles a hidden second Special Weapon.

The characters in the game are not what you'd expect. The past games had characters that were a bit wacky, with TMIII and TM4's roster being a little more cartoony. In Black, however, most of the roster are inmates locked up in Blackfield Asylum, which include the series mascot Sweet Tooth, who is portrayed as a serial killer, Mr. Grimm, who is now human and a cannibal seeking revenge against the man who made him that way, and Preacher, an evangelist who believes he is possessed by a demon that made him kill an entire church full of people during an exorcism of a baby. Yes, each of these drivers are not down with the black humor and wackiness of the first two games, and even have prologue and middle movies along with their ending, the middle explaining what caused them to go insane in the first place. And this world's Calypso is not like the Calypso of the first two games. This Calypso is actually done where he won't trick a person, however, in order to get your prize from Calypso with no bad twist that can end your life, you basically need to have something malicious in mind, which most of the drivers do, as their hearts desire revenge against those responsible for their descent into insanity. Any driver with a noble goal, like Agent Stone, a SWAT team officer who wants to go back in time to correct a mistake he made during an operation, are bound to meet a grim, unexpected twist that could end up costing them.

Twisted Metal: Black brought the series back to the former glory of the first two games, although it would take place in a world so dark, so graphic, it would become the first in the series to receive a Mature rating, but it is a good game. If you have a Playstation 4, you can download this game, which has trophy support.
