Torch Song (1953)
7/10
A solid performance

In Torch Song, Joan Crawford takes a risk and plays a character similar to her offscreen persona: a hardened diva. She's a Broadway star who loses her temper when she doesn't get her way and demands perfection out of those around her. To her fans, she's sugary sweet, but to her colleagues, she's almost intolerable. Joan gives a very solid performance, perhaps because the role hits close to home, and when she cries herself to sleep out of loneliness, you hope it's not too late.

Michael Wilding, a blind piano player, isn't afraid of Joan's temper, and he stands up to her as no one else does. At first she hates his rudeness, but when she opens her mind, she realizes that he "sees" her in a new, true light. Can the leopard change her spots, and can Joan thaw her icy heart, or is she doomed to be alone and revered only by her fans? To find out, watch this enjoyable drama. You'll have to get past a couple of silly dance numbers and Joan's red hair, but it's still a good movie.
