Review of Dagon

Dagon (2001)
6/10
A fair adaptation of Lovecraft's work.

If there's one thing that is sorely missing in horror cinema it's adaptations of HP Lovecraft. Sure there are movies like "Reanimator" and "In the Mouth of Madness" that take aspects of his work but until we get Guillermo del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness" we really only have this movie.

This is an adaptation of "Shadow Over Innsmouth" except it's set in Spain instead of New England and the hero of our story happens to be there with his friends on vacation. Long story short they're on a boat, there's an accident and they need to head over to this little island for help. What follows is pretty close to the story in which they discover a group of fish people that have started worshiping Dagon in exchange for treasures, lots of fish and eventually becoming deep ones themselves.

All in all it is a decent adaptation that keeps a lot of the creepiness of the original story. It feels rather low budget but a lot of that can be forgiven due to when it came out and the overall story. While not a flawless story it is really the only true Lovecraftian movie out there.

Highly recommended to fans of HP Lovecraft's work and those that are tired of current horror movies that think lots of blood and gore makes it good.
