Carole Lombard. right before WW II
9 July 2019
Lombard is Kay Winters, american actress in paris. She stumbles into Rene, and wants nothing to do with him at first; she quickly warms up to him when it gets to be dinnertime. The only problem is, they both have dates with other people. Some fun lines in this lightweight comedy, but it takes a while for a story to get going. another fun gag where the characters say fun things while dressed up in animal masks at costume party. Songs by Rodgers and Hart, with a fun one "There's a boy in Harlem", sung by Jeni LeGon. Fun bit where the tables in the restaurant all have telephones, and tables can call one another. Hollywood regulars Allen Jenkins (always the nasal sidekick) and Ralph Bellamy co-star. Bellamy, as usual, plays the awkward country bumpkin. fighting for his girl-friend, just as in His Girl Friday.... sadly, the awesome Carole Lombard would only be around another couple years after making this one -- died in a plane crash in 1942, while married to Clark Gable. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, who was part of the Wizard of Oz uncredited directors confusion. It's pretty good stuff. made right before the U.S. entered WW II. fun, lightweight romp. Lots of talking, so we can tell it started out as a play. feels like it was cleaned up considerably, since we're now deep DEEP in the film production code. lots of talk about preserving Kay's reputation. but the story started in Paris, where things were much grittier and naughtier at this time.
