Riotously funny

THE GHOST OF ST. MICHAEL'S is a riotously funny Will Hay vehicle, a simple spin on the delights of OH, MR. PORTER! but one made with verve and enthusiasm. The plot is slight and the gags familiar, but there's a real energy to this one and an effort on the part of the writer to make it zing, and zing it indeed does. It's wartime story in which Hay's usual bumbling schoolteacher and his class head off to the Scottish islands as part of a mass evacuation. There, they entangle with a string of murders and a spooky local legend.

This is a fast-paced and engaging little comedy with plenty of laughs dotted throughout. The interactions between Hay and his pupils are a delight, and it's particularly pleasing to see Charles Hawtrey given such a prominent role. Raymond Huntley and John Laurie, the latter virtually playing his DAD'S ARMY role, help things gel too. This is one of the most enjoyable Hay films I've watched.
