The 2019 Snuff '76 "remake."
14 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Checking E-Mails,I was excited to find one from The Electric cinema in Birmingham (oldest working cinema in the UK) about a special "Repatriation" remake of the Grindhouse flick Snuff taking place,as part of a arts project called "And what it became is not what it is now" taking place across the city. After attending a detailed 50 year anniversary Black Sabbath exhibition taking place in Birmingham Museum, I Picked up a Gulp Fiction mocktail at the entrance, and got set for a sniff at snuff.

View on the film:

Separating the image to the original Snuff playing side by side next to the 2019 "remake" recording sessions taking place, artist Joaquin Aras, (who did a very good post-screening Q&A,and appeared happy that I knew who the original directors were!) follows the exhibition he has made of remaking lost Argentina animated films, with a meticulous deconstruction of the Grindhouse original, and "Repatriate" it to the original filming location of Argentina.

Slapped with a new ending by producer Allan Shackleton (shot by Simon Nuchtern) of a "real" snuff flick, and the producer coming up with the tag line " The film that could only be made in South America...Where life is CHEAP!" Aras slashes up the infamous tag line with a striking Post-modernism draining the original footage directed by Adult film auteurs Michael & Roberta Findlay of grime, leaving the slaying and sex scenes as scrapping of knives and actors kissing their hands in a audio booth. Spending years tracking down the un-credited cast/crew of the original (leading to two of the original actresses rerecording their parts) Aras displays an incredible attention to detail in re-creating the sound effects, (Snuff was originally shot without a soundtrack) from the rumbling score to each footstep and sniff in snuff.
