8/10
Magnificent, a classic spoilt by Kirk Douglas.

Stunning production design, a brooding James Mason as antihero Nemo,, the awe inspiring early steampunk Nautilus, a good anti war and anti colonialism stance, wondrous underwater photography and a great story, it all works, except Kirk Douglas and his Ned Land character, it spoils most of the scenes he is in, played for comedic effect, it clashes with the rest of a thoughtful, beautifully directed film. I can't stand his everyman, working idiotic schlub, the adults are talking! Apart from Ned, it still stands the test of time, and then Mason got to do 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' a film I love even more. Take out Ned and it gets 10 stars.
