MGM offered the star role to Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner and very interestingly Lucille Ball all of whom were great and would have brought their own interpretations to the role of a faded movie Queen but Geraldine Page is magnificent and justly was nominated for an Oscar.
Along with page this was the year Bette Davis thought she would win her 3rd Oscar and blamed Joan Crawford for campaigning against Bette. Katharine Hepburn was splendid in Long Days Journey Into Night, Lee Remick was memorable in Days Of Wine and Roses, and Anne Bancroft repeating her Broadway performance was superb and was the winner. It was a great year and since all 5 are dead it would be great to see the votes each got.
