Warning: Spoilers
Not having read the Philip K. Dick short story this was based on, I had no idea where the action was headed. The picture really had you going in different directions on what was happening with protagonist Spencer Olham (Gary Sinise). One minute you're certain that he's really himself, the next you're questioning whether he's actually the cyborg infiltrator Major Hathaway (Vincent D'Onofrio) is trying to hunt down. The sense of apprehension and paranoia is palpable, and one really isn't prepared for the way the story ends. At least I wasn't, so the twist concerning Olham and his wife Maya (Madeleine Stowe) made for a startling finale. With the film in progress I thought more could have been made of the Cim-Code that Olham planted on Hathaway, but that would have negated the film's resolution. The hardest thing to wrap your head around at the end is how it was possible to make both replicants so authentic as to believe they were their original selves. I guess that's why they call it science fiction.
