Gritty, well-written series without sentimentality or compromise

Well written and gritty, this is a top notch series with some stellar acting. The direction is taut and the script is tight, with very little wasted material. While the acting throughout is beyond reproach, it does show how far Nicola Walker has come: in this she plays a rather thick cop with her usual stoic mumbling monotone but blows lines meant to be sarcastic because she talks so low and without nuance. I had to put on subtitles to catch some her asides, which are quite funny but lost in this case. She hasn't attempted much humour since.
