The Spider (1945)
10/10
Great low budget thriller from 1945
1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion, this film was great. Starring Richard Conte as a private detective accused of murdering his partner Florence Cain (played by the wonderful Ann Savage), and Faye Marlowe as a woman whose intentions seem less than noble at first, but who turns out to be a fearful woman who wants to know the truth behind her sister's disappearance and supposed murder. To round out the cast are actors like Kurt Krueger, Cara Williams, and the always funny Mantan Moreland.

It's true that this film isn't the greatest low-budget crime thriller ever made, but it's also true that it isn't the worst. I've definitely seen worse, and in my opinion, the film was exciting and suspenseful, and provided a pretty good mystery plot. Richard Conte was great as the detective out to prove his innocence, and Faye Marlowe was something. Not only was she gorgeous, but she was a wonderful actress, and it's a wonder why her career didn't materialize. She signed a contract to 20th Century Fox in 1944, making her film debut at age 19 in the film noir "Hangover Square." This was her third film, and she'd only make two more after this, which is a shame. She had so much potential, that I could tell in watching her performance in this 59-minute film. She did write a memoir: Fanchon's Daughter, that seems to be an interesting account of the hardships and blessings a foster child has to go through (given she was one herself). I haven't had the chance to read it yet, but I'm hoping to very soon.

Overall, a good film, if you don't expect too much for a low-budgeter from 20th Century Fox toward the end of the war, with names (other than Richard Conte and Ann Savage) that are relatively unfamiliar. My rating is 10.
