The manager (Burt Lancaster) of an airport faces a crisis when a bomber (Van Heflin) severely damages a plane.
Airport is best known for kick-starting the wave of 70s disaster films with all-star casts. However, the film is overlong, with too much time being wasted on Burt Lancaster's uninteresting marriage problems. I mean, it's an hour-and-a-half before Van Heflin even boards the plane with the bomb!
Helen Hayes deservedly won an Oscar in a delightful performance as an old lady stowaway, and Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset and Van Heflin are all good. However, Burt Lancaster looks bored and the director makes use of split screen throughout, which was probably groundbreaking in 1970 but is just annoying now.
First time viewing. 2.5/5
