I was reading the comments of the other viewers and although they do make very valid points about the legality of the main players in the drama I enjoyed the movie emensly because the story is very close to my story with my mother been forced to give away her son by her mother
She felt my mother was to old to bring up a child so I was put up for adoption
The family I went to ironically was a family even older than my mom
My adopted mom couldn't have children after being exposed To German Measles while pregnant
So far I'm still on track with the theme of the movie
Unlike the birth mother here I grew up not knowing I was adopted until I found out axcidently at the age of thirty four
Once I found out I decided not to look until both my parents were dead
I realized the consequences might me never meeting my birth family but it was a risk I was prepared to take
I eventually found them but sadly my mom had already passed on eleven years before I found out
That's the base story of why this movie gets to me
My adopted mom was paranoid about me, sheltering me and watching me like a hawk, worrying that my birth mom would come take me away
In this case her baby was taken from her under duress (made to sign papers while not in a fully conscious state
Her father was more interested in protecting his name from scandal because he was on the way up and couldn't afford the adverse publicity that would come with an illegitimate grandchild So he connived to put the baby up for adoption While his daughter was semi conscious after the birth and drugged he got his wife to get his daughter to sign the papers giving the baby away A lovely couple adopts the baby and are very happy Because the mother was unable to have children But this next part is the sad part and I can feel for them Especially because it could have been my adopted parents The mother illegally goes work at the adoption home in the hope of finding her child After finding the parents she visits them posing as a social Worker then does her best to get her daughter back Ultimately the truth of her charade is discovered and poses a threat to get her daughter back because of the illegaliality of how she got the information She could have been jailed for her actions but she makes a passionate plea to the new parents begging them to give her baby back Ultimately they decide to do so and don't press charges against her Because of them giving back her daughter she bonds with them saying that her daughter will have two mothers Also out of respect for them giving her daughter back she decides to keep the baby's name that was given to her In the end Karma comes around and the woman discovers she's pregnant at last
Now one very salient point that did come out was that ultimately the truth will out irrespective of what anyone does The adoptee will if they so desire want to know more about his or her adoption When the search is done it would have come out that the child had been signed away under "duress" and that could destroy both families
As an adoptee I saw this happening sadly a bit to often Closed adoptions ultimately become open ones despite all attempts to conceal it My adoption was closed but when I started looking a program called SEARCH FOR YOUR ORIGINS had just been started Both adoptee and birth mom could put their names down with the hope of connecting In my case it had just started so even if I had known I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it
The people who are criterzing the show don't know what it's like to loose a child or have your child put up for adoption or the fear that adopted parents have hoping and praying that the day never comes that the birth parents never come into their lives
While the movie is flimsy the messages behind it are very powerful I'm reviewing this from an experience point of view having been there and got the T shirt hat and pants And not as just a superficial viewer As they say Don't let me critersize someone until i have walked a mike in their shoes
