Sea Fever

'Sea Fever' caught me by surprise. It certainly has an indie feel but at the same time pays homage to such big budget Sci Fi greats as 'The Thing' and 'Alien'. The intimacy of the boat crew as they struggle to get along with each other did also remind me of 'Jaws'.

'Sea Fever' is a simple story about the crew of an Irish fishing trawler that encounters a giant parasitic organism that attaches itself to the hull of their boat. Seasoned professionals Connie Nielsen and Dougray Scott are among the cast but it is Hermione Corfield as scientist Siobahn that steals the show. Corfield leads the cast convincingly as the parasite enters the trawlers water supply and then proceeds to infect the crew. This is where comparisons to John Carpenter's 'The Thing' become apparent. I believe that 'Sea Fever' becomes even more poignant due to the escalating threat which is sweeping the globe at the time of this films release.

Writer/Director Neasa Hardiman masterfully steers her movie through its 1hr 35min runtime without needing all the glitz from Hollywood. CGI is sparingly but effectively utilised. This movie is all about the acting. A dialogue driven piece that is riveting due to all onscreen being first rate. This film is a prime example of how to make an effective movie with a small budget.

I had a good time with this film. It has a well paced script that is performed onscreen by some great actors and a writer/director that should be destined for even greater things. For fans of the genre 'Sea Fever' is a treat and for fans of good filmmaking there's much to enjoy too.
