I loved the concept ever since I saw the trailer. It is not the common teen romance story and I am glad that Netflix decided to use different actors than their usual.
It is very poetically written and I mean it in the best way possible. All the different quotes used, not only give a better sense to what the main actors are trying to express, but they are also very informative.
Beautiful shots are always a win to my eyes when it comes to films and it is clear just by the preview that the film has accomplished that in so many ways.
I loved the way they transferred platonic relationships to erotic ones and erotic relationships to platonics and how they covered a few different types of adolescent relationships in contrast to what most movies do.
Also the fact that Ellie Chu lived with her unemployed dad broke the stereotypical "single mom takes care of kids, while struggling to balance work life", which I understand is very common nowadays, but overplayed in movies and shows (in my opinion).
I admired thee character development of both Paul Munsky and Aster Flores which was mainly obvious towards the end of the movie.
Now when I talked about the cliches in the movies, here are the main points I am reffering to: -smart girl has no friends, gets bullied and is only noticed when somebody needs her help -girl ignores boy, boy likes girl, girl helps boy, girl likes boy (platonically) -popular boy with daddy's money gets all the girls and has superiority complex -boy chases girl at he train station like they saw in a movie earlier -all that "looking over your date and telling you what to say"
Please note that the fact that I mentioned these typical movie scenes, does not mean I disliked those parts of the movie. I actually enjoyed many of them, but I think they are a little overused.
Overall, I found the film great and inovative and I think it would help a lot of teens struggling with their sexualities know that they are not alone and that they will find their way when it's time, but it would also give a great overview to people who identify as straight to understand a few of the struggles that many of the lgbt community members have to go through in a daily basis (focused on a high school in a small town, which means more discrimination than there probably is in a bigger city). I think watching this movie can only benefit people in their lives!
