Nightingales escaped me when it was first shown back in 1990 but several critics rated it very highly.

The first episode demonstrates that it is sitcom with a surreal tinge. The episode even ends with a parody of Dixon of Dock Green.

Three security guards patrol an office block at night. They are led by the veteran Sarge (James Ellis). Bell (David Threlfall) is the rowdy one. Carter (Robert Lindsay) is the clever one. There is also the dead one, no one told head office so the other three divide his wage packet.

The first episode has them training a newcomer Eric (Ian Sears) who suddenly begins to howl as it is a full moon. While Eric has hairy issues, there is a surprise inspection from head office. It looks like Sarge may have to deal with the inspector in his own style rather violently.

It is certainly offbeat and weird. I can see why it might not had found an audience. The all male cast might be an issue, that is 50% of your audience not being catered to.

Ian Sears looked familiar to me, I then realised he was in the BBC series Johnny Jarvis. He now works as an editor in the USA. Well he knew not to count on any repeat fees from Johnny Jarvis.
