Bloody Sect (1982)
6/10
Has been compared to Mattei's works. Not wet enough for my liking, but not a complete dud

Warning: Spoilers
Maybe i'm spoiled, but i feel i lucked out one, newly scanned in 2K by Vinegar Syndrome. At least the slipcover is neat.

Sure it has some nudity and the murder set pieces are truly gonzo, and that ending, i mean Jesus H. Yeah, it riffs on Rosemary's baby, but not to the plagiaristic extent that i am accustomed to. In premise alone really, but the satanic priest angle i thought was quite good, with Henry Ragoud looking like he was born to play a satanic cult leader.

My biggest gripe? That Bloody Sect shares the pacing problems with Mattei's lesser known work. Not to say there aren't times when things go truly insane like i said, but they are too far spaced out to warrant having to read so many subtitles. The dialogue isn't even that crazy.

Bloody Sect is sleazy and wild at times, but it's still just half way from being the kind of film The Other Hell should have been. I know it's a little unfair comparing this film so heavily to those of an established cult icon, but there isn't really any other reference points really. Spanish genre cinema, outside of Jess Franco's sphere is under reported in comparison to their Italian counterparts. Pulsebeat, anyone? Here's hoping this isn't the best early 80's Spain has to offer.
