George C. Scott is perfectly cast as the Hemingway type in an adaptation of an otherwise mediocre so-so novel

1940 and on an island in the Bahamas WWII seems so far away. An ex-pat American (George C. Scott) lives on an island paradise. One day in the late Summer of 1940 he re-connects his three sons who come to stay with him, but he remains frustrated that the war is in a distant world.

An adaptation of a mediocre posthumous Ernest Hemingway novel, Scott certainly looks the part and puts in a good performance. The book and film includes some strong semi-autobiographical references and is undoubtedly beautiful to look at, although as a whole the film doesn't hold together as well as it perhaps should. David Hemmings appears as his rummy friend, with Scott memorable as the Hemingway like alter-ego character.
