Review of Even the Rain

Even the Rain (2010)
7/10
a film within a film
4 November 2020
It's a film within a film! when the production crew shows up in Bolivia to hire locals and set up for a film about Columbus, the minor conflicts begin. the director Costa (Luis Tosar) is out to pinch every penny, and his assistant Sebastián (Gael Bernal) has to keep putting out fires that Costa has started. later on, much bigger troubles start, Sebastián may not be able to keep a lid on things. Daniel, one of the locals, (Juan Aduviri) gets hired on as an actor, but he turns out to have a much bigger role in this story than anyone knew. water and water rights are a hot button issue here, (like everywhere, then and now. and certainly in the future!). it turns out that the locals are very aware of history, and don't want to be taken advantage of yet again, by their own leaders or anyone else. spanish director Icíar Bollaín had already directed numerous films by this time, and does a fine job of weaving the stories together. has some similarities to "The Comedians", with Burton and Taylor; foreigners are caught up in a civil rebellion. Really good! english subtitles over spanish.
