Lots of Big names For a Fish Tale

Warning: Spoilers
The guy who wrote the play for this, also wrote The Manchurian Candidate. Big difference between Romantic Comedy and Drama for sure. This one has languished while the other is a classic. There's some good reason for that.

Cast is not one of them. Debbie Reynolds is terrific in this. Tony Curtis is good, and the supporting cast has a lot to be said for it. Roger C. Carmel sticks out in a short role and Walter Matheau is always good in anything he does. There's plenty of decent acting in the cast.

The story while a bit different for 1954 sort of makes sense. Trouble is with the G family style of Comedy in this era, the script really can't bring to life really well how a man really would feel in a woman's body. Granted Reynolds does as well as is possible given the times and the script. There is only so much that can be done within this frame work.

Curtis is good in this movie. If there is a problem with the script, I am trying to figure out why the repo men are not already in taking everything from the dead Charlie who died in bankruptcy. It's a kinder and gentler time I guess as even Lex Luther would be swooping in with his lips drooling for this beachfront property. The comedy mentions this but stays away from any jokes about it. Perhaps the joke is on the bank.

Charlie was no doubt a cad who was a male philanderer and really deserved punishment though death was too good for him. He really needed to get tortured instead. That is the reincarnation message of this one. Nice for a rainy day viewing and available on You Tube.
