The Bow (2005)
6/10
Fishing for virginity, shooting for love
15 December 2020
Keeping company with catching up on years of movie intentions, is completionism. I'm digging into the older movies of my favourite directors.

Chang-wook Park is my easy Korean favourite but Ki-duk Kim may be second. I've watched 7 of his. 5 ranged from good to excellent whilst the two that were average were still bizarrely fascinating.

My eighth was 'The Bow' which began elegantly with an old man converting the weapon into a musical instrument, and close-up shots of a pretty woman getting her face decorated.

Like Kim's 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter', there's a rare sense of optimism and beauty but that's deception. All Kim's movies turn weird, and sexual or violent (or both).

'The Bow' is set entirely on a fishing boat that aims at virginity. In mood, it's a good buddy to the subtle and surreal 'Three Iron' which found lovers fading into living ghosts. Here, it's fantasy that fades...
