WATCH THIS JUST FOR STANWYCK
6 March 2021
It truly is a great debate, particularly for Warner Brothers stars, as who gave the most earthy performances early in their careers. It has to be a hands down tie between Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis because both were dynamic no matter how you cut the cake. Davis commented in later years that all the B films she appeared in early in her career were mere stepping stones to stardom, however they nevertheless were entertaining and a sure snapshot as to the makings of a star. Same could be said with Stanwyck with such films as LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT. It's an oldie, true, but one heck of a goody all about women, both young and old alike, behind bars, their lives and their relationships with each other. Of course the writers have to spice it up with some snappy dialogue and a jail break in the works, but Stanwyck shines throughout and most definitely the one you keep your eye on. That in itself tells the tale. What also will impress you is the stable of character actors that Warner Brothers sprinkles in these programmers. Ruth Donnelly, the queen of the one liners, is perfectly cast as one of the "gang", along with brooding Maude Eburne, one of those versatile actresses who you know well, yet always forget their name. Also we get a glimpse of the legendary singer Lillian Roth, who was quite a screen personality in her own right. True, these were lower budget features, quickly made for a quick profit, but after all these years, guess what, we're still watching them and havin' a good ole time at that! This has been out for awhile in a dvd box set and if you shop around a bit you'll now find it at a bargain price. And who doesn't like a bargain in glorious BLACK AND WHITE!
