Based on the plot synopsis and poster, I was expecting more John Goodman. While he's great and has a strong presence in the film, it'd be wrong to call him the protagonist. It's more of a coming of age film with kids as the protagonists, but thankfully it's a pretty good one, and even though it wasn't what I was expecting, I still had a good time.
Is somewhat reminiscent of Gremlins 2, which makes sense coming out shortly after Dante made that once infamous yet now revered sequel. This one does have a slightly more serious tone in parts, and some of the emotional beats are fairly effective.
It's not absolutely exceptional in terms of its presentation or humour or narrative, but it's a pleasant watch and slickly made film, and surely something of a love letter to the films Dante grew up on, as well as aspects of his childhood. It does strike me as a personal film, in a good way.
Also probably goes without saying, but I would happily watch both Mant and that sentient shopping trolley movie, if they both real life films.
