Lotte Reiniger Works Her Magic
3 April 2021
I don't know how many versions of the story of Aladdin I have encountered, from reading version of the Thousand and One Nights, to stage shows, to short cartoons to the Disney version. And while it's a fine story, there doesn't seem to be much to add to it. And then I looked at Lotte Reiniger's version.

True enough, theres little to add in the way of the story, but her silhouette animation always entrances me, with its ornately detailed ladies, humorous villains, and spurts of magic, as here when we see the spirit of the lamp bring Aladdin items of increasing value to court the princess with.

Neither is cre neglected in how to represent the genie of the lamp. Unlike most characters in Miss Reiniger's films, his is not a black silhouette, but cloudy overlay t represent the fact he is a spirit.

It doesn't add much, if anything, to the story of Aladdin, but presents it charmingly.
