Ordinary but original. Not hilarious but humorous.

'Mistress America' is very strange movie. One minute I expect it to be plain but next 50 minutes time flies because I am so engrossed. I am writing a review right now, but I just can't figure out how to explain. OK! Sushi! At first, why you eat raw fish? It looks exotic, experimental, no taste & too plain, and difficult. However, you just enjoy that subtle taste of pleasantly healthy meal at the last.

The director's contrast between New York and Greenwich is interesting to notice. In NY, Tracy's life is described very realistic and even boring. Classes, friends, eating lunch alone.. Then, the event happening in Greenwich is surreal. MC, Dylan, a pregnant lawyer Karen, and a neighbor Harold all seem unfocused, empty, but farcical at the same time. Media stage for the pitch is over-the-top and ludicrous. Even the flow of the story becomes one of those affected and forced-happy-ending movies in a satirical way. The view of the camera is changed from the open, simple, linear angle in New York to building of many stairs and vertical layers and walls in Greenwich so Nicolette can overhear Tracy and Tony's conversation, and MC can pop out of nowhere in the middle of Brooke and Dylan's conversation.

The greatest thing about the movie is its relatable-ness. Because I can identify myself with two protagonists, it becomes 'my' special movie. I used to be an awkward college student who felt as I did not belong 'anywhere' and looked up to old, mature, rich, and stable women in their 30s like Tracy. At the age of 30 to which I expected to achieve something and to know everything, I feel for Brooke, still figuring out her next move and being childish and irresponsible at times.
