The Doorman (2020)
4/10
Die Hard at the hotel
4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
THE DOORMAN is a Romanian-made DIE HARD rip-off set in an empty hotel rather than a tower block, but the two plots are much the same. This cheapie is much the inferior movie despite being directed by Japanese maverick Ryuhei Kitamura, who once made such fresh and frenetic films as VERSUS and AZUMI. Sadly those days seem long in the past when compared to this cliched mess of a film which does have a handful of heavily stylised fight sequences, but they're spoilt by poor editing, indifferent choreography, and a protagonist in the form of Ruby Rose who gets doubled more than Steven Seagal in one of his latter-day films. Why cast someone like this as a fighter when it's clear they can only do very basic moves? The main reason to tune in is the cast, with the dream triumvirate of Louis Mandylor, Jean Reno and Aksel Hennie playing the baddies, but even they have very little to do.
