20th Century Farmland USA - Our VInes Have Tender Grapes
2 August 2021
There are no special effects in this film. There is no color or violence as well. No romantic triangles or overly dramatic situations. It is just a simple story of the heartland, told from the perspective of a young girl growing up on a farm in Wisconsin. Margaret O'Brien, of course, steals this film from Edward G Robinson (who, quite frankly, is not very convincing as a farmer). The rest of the cast is superb. And even though Edward G is obviously a city boy lost in the country, he gives it the old college try. This film is about a time and place that no longer exists in America. It was a wonderful time that we will never see again. Corporations have taken over milk and food productions, and the small farmer no longer exists. But, it was nice while it lasted. Enjoy the nostalgia.
