More original than most costume horrors
1 November 2021
This gothic film was the first Italian horror movie shot in colour. Set in the Netherlands, it is about a windmill whose function is strange. When its sails spin round it sets in motion a procession of moving sculptures of women in scenes of torture and death; a journalist is sent to cover this famous 'horror mill' and while there meets the enigmatic daughter of the curator. The macabre mystery behind the mill is eventually revealed. This one was a little more original than most costume horrors. The Dutch setting with flat expanses and isolated mills, was a pretty effective one too and the story overall was a little more unusual than most others.
