Review of Malaya

Malaya (1949)
6/10
top level talent
14 November 2021
Newspaper reporter John Royer (James Stewart) escapes Japanese occupied Malaya on one of the last boats back to the States. His boss hasn't seen him for five years and has been appointed the head of the west coast rubber drive. There is a dire need for rubber in the war effort. John suggests a way to smuggle rubber out of Malaya right under the Japanese's noses. He needs some gold, some help from the Navy, and smuggler Carnahan (Spencer Tracy) who is locked up in Alactraz.

This has some top level talents. The writing is a bit clunky. I would let it go if it was still wartime. The characters talk too much. There is too much exposition. The ending is also a bit annoying when it has to wrap up with a happy ending. The positive is the greatness of the actors. They keep the story moving along.
