Paul Bartel pretty much rips every Western ever made for comedic purposes, in the same way Tarantino rips every grindhouse movie for his violence-p-rn films.
Tab Hunter plays it straight, which really sells it. Divine is a lot of fun. The supporting cast is full of recognizable faces and capable actors.
There's a story about buried gold in here somewhere, but who cares. The plot is besides the point.
I regret not piling my friends into the car and going to see this at the drive-in the summer of 1984. It would have been a lot of laughs. OK, it's not Blazing Saddles, but it's a h3ll of a lot funnier than most alleged comedies then or now. In fact, there are enough funny one-liners in this movie that I'm a little surprised it didn't become a cult hit where fans constantly quote from it in online chat boards.
I might have to set about changing that.
